In the winter of 2014, the life of Aaron Donelle McCray, Jr., a 22-year-old male, was tragically cut short in Norman, Oklahoma. On the evening of February 15th, an altercation at the Cherrystone Apartments would end in fatal gunfire. McCray, a certified nursing assistant known for his love of sports and fast cars, was shot multiple times in the chest and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The man responsible for the shooting, Ethan Spruill, did not flee the scene.
He went to his own apartment upstairs and waited for law enforcement to arrive after a 911 call was made during the struggle. Upon their arrival, Spruill surrendered to the Norman police officers without incident and was taken into custody.
The subsequent investigation and legal proceedings revealed a violent confrontation between the two men. Spruill claimed that McCray, who weighed significantly more than him, had him in a chokehold and he feared for his life. Believing he was about to be killed and unable to escape, Spruill drew a handgun and fired multiple times until McCray released his grip.
Ethan Spruill was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Aaron McCray, Jr. Following a jury trial that took place in April 2016, Spruill was convicted of the lesser offense of first-degree manslaughter. The jury recommended a sentence of twenty-three years in prison, and the court formally entered the judgment and sentence in July 2016. An appeal of the conviction was later affirmed by the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals in 2018.
