In the late winter of 2015, a violent encounter in Tulsa, Oklahoma, claimed the life of one man and left another injured. Omar Carillo Florez, a 26-year-old male, was fatally shot on March 2, 2015. Another man, Terry Fitzgerald Jackson, was also shot but survived.
The incident led to the arrest of 56-year-old Joseph Allen Brown. He was subsequently charged with the first-degree murder of Florez and shooting with intent to kill Jackson. The case proceeded to trial in the District Court of Tulsa County.
During the legal proceedings, it was not disputed that Brown was the shooter. His defense, however, argued that his actions were not born of malice. Brown claimed that he had been previously robbed and carried a firearm for protection. He asserted that he felt threatened by Florez and that the shooting of Jackson was accidental.
Despite these claims, the prosecution presented its case, and on January 14, 2016, a jury found Joseph Allen Brown guilty on both counts. A few days after the shooting, on March 5, 2015, Brown also faced a charge for unlawful possession of a controlled drug.
