On April 18, 2023, 55-year-old James McDaniel was fatally shot at a QuikTrip convenience store located at Pine and Peoria in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The assailant, identified as 61-year-old Carlton Jefferson Gilford, approached McDaniel from behind while he was at an ATM inside the store and shot him in the head. After McDaniel fell to the ground, Gilford fired additional shots, ensuring his death.
