In the late spring of 2015, what was initially reported as a tragic suicide in Guthrie, Oklahoma, unraveled into a case of homicide. Geoffrey Todd Wakefield, a 29-year-old White/Caucasian male, was found with a gunshot wound to his head at his residence on Browne Avenue on May 30, 2015. He was immediately transported to a hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Wakefield succumbed to his injuries nearly a month later, on June 23, 2015.
The initial report to the authorities came from Wakefield's fiancée, Dana Marie Reeder. She called 911, claiming she had heard a gunshot and then a thud from another room in the house, leading her to believe Wakefield had taken his own life. However, as investigators delled into the case, inconsistencies in her account began to surface. The narrative of a self-inflicted wound started to crumble under the weight of the evidence and further questioning.
Months later, in February 2016, the investigation took a dramatic turn. Reeder's story had changed. She admitted to investigators that she and Wakefield had been arguing on the day of the incident. During the heated exchange, she confessed to grabbing a handgun and, as Wakefield turned to walk away, she raised the weapon and shot him in the head. Further investigation revealed that a story Reeder had told about an engagement ring Wakefield had supposedly purchased for her was a fabrication, seemingly to divert suspicion from herself. Investigators found no evidence of a struggle or any injuries to Reeder that would support a claim of self-defense. Consequently, Dana Marie Reeder was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm after a felony conviction. She was held in the Logan County jail without bail.
