On August 15, 2015, Trey Brenon Pritchard, a 46-year-old White male, was fatally shot while off duty in Midwest City, Oklahoma. A lieutenant with the Sapulpa Police Department, Pritchard had accompanied his cousin, Jeffrey Grafton, to the Travelers Inn. They were there to retrieve a pickup truck that Grafton's son, Jonathan Grafton, had taken without permission.
Jeffrey Grafton went to the motel room first to speak with his son.
After hearing a gunshot, Pritchard, who had been waiting in his vehicle, went to the room to intervene. Inside the room, an altercation had occurred, and Jonathan Grafton shot his father and then shot Pritchard. Both Trey Pritchard and Jeffrey Grafton sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the head. A motel employee later discovered their bodies after noticing the room's door was ajar.
Following the shooting, Jonathan Grafton and his girlfriend, Daphne Mason, fled the scene in the stolen pickup truck. They were apprehended approximately 36 hours later at a convenience store in Enid, about 100 miles away. Two individuals were arrested and charged in connection with the murders.
Jonathan Grafton, the shooter, was ultimately sentenced to 25 years in prison in June 2017. His accomplice, Daphne Mason, received a five-year prison sentence. Trey Pritchard, a 24-year veteran of the Sapulpa Police Department, was survived by his wife and five children.
