In what was described as a senseless act of violence, 17-year-old Calvin Dehuy Walker Jr., a Black male, was shot and killed on May 6, 2023, in Midwest City, Oklahoma. Remembered by his family as an outgoing and loving young man, he was affectionately called 'Jr.'. A sophomore at Douglas High School, he had previously played football at Carl Albert High School and worked at Sonic.
His family described him as a great role model to his younger siblings and cousins.
On that tragic Saturday near Northwest 10th Street and Air Depot Boulevard, a disturbance broke out that ultimately led to gunfire. According to his family, Calvin was an innocent bystander, simply hanging out with friends when the shooting occurred. His uncle stated that the situation had nothing to do with him. Family members who were nearby had to take cover from the gunshots and tragically discovered Calvin's body on the ground afterward.
In the wake of the shooting, Midwest City Police began an investigation that led to the arrest of a juvenile on a first-degree murder charge. Due to the suspect's age, their identity has not been publicly disclosed. Another individual, Lorenzo Carlisle, was also arrested on a charge of accessory to murder. A Lyft driver reportedly captured video of armed teenagers following the fatal shooting, which may have been related to the incident. While an arrest has been made, Calvin's family has expressed that they believe there is more to the story. They are now left to mourn the loss of a young man who they say had a bright future ahead of him and should have been looking forward to his high school graduation.
