Leon Hamilton, a 69-year-old Black man known to friends and family as "Gooney," was remembered as a fun, quick-witted, and loving father, uncle, and brother. The retired Dunjee High School graduate’s life was cut short in a violent encounter inside his Midwest City, Oklahoma, apartment on the afternoon of November 10, 2020.
Around 2 p.m. that Tuesday, police were dispatched to the Sandhills Apartments in the 1400 block of North Midwest Boulevard.
The call reported a possible domestic disturbance and the sound of gunshots. When officers arrived, they found Leon Hamilton deceased inside his apartment from a gunshot wound to his chest.
The investigation began at the scene, where detectives discovered a cellphone near Mr. Hamilton's body that did not belong to him. Witnesses told police they had heard Mr. Hamilton arguing with a woman inside the apartment just before at least two shots were fired. Immediately after the gunshots, a woman was seen walking away from his breezeway. Surveillance video from the complex showed a woman returning to her own residence right after the homicide.
The cellphone found at the scene was traced to 42-year-old Oletah Anglin. Investigators also learned that after the shooting, Anglin spoke to her neighbors, telling them that she and a friend "had just killed someone" and that she needed a ride. Witnesses described her as being armed with a handgun and in a "panic state." When police interviewed Anglin and searched her home, they found Mr. Hamilton's cellphone.
Based on the evidence, an arrest warrant was issued for Oletah Anglin on a charge of first-degree murder. She was taken into custody on the morning of Saturday, November 14, 2020. Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes stated that Anglin was with the victim at the time of the shooting and had "inadvertently left her cell phone inside the apartment as she fled." As of Anglin's arrest in November 2020, the chief noted that the case was ongoing as investigators continued to gather evidence and interview additional witnesses.
