In what initially appeared to be a suicide, 69-year-old Kenneth Nix was found dead in his Broken Arrow, Oklahoma home on March 21, 2016. Nix, a male, had sustained a gunshot wound. The initial report was made by his ex-wife, Judith Nix, who claimed to have discovered his body.
However, investigators at the scene quickly began to suspect that the narrative of a self-inflicted death was a fabrication.
The position of the body and other evidence at the scene were inconsistent with a suicide. A subsequent investigation revealed that Kenneth Nix had been murdered.
The focus of the investigation soon turned to his ex-wife, Judith Nix. Despite their divorce, the two had reportedly maintained a close, albeit complex, relationship. Prosecutors would later argue that financial motives and a desire to gain ownership of his house led Judith Nix to kill her former husband. Evidence presented during the trial suggested that she shot him and then attempted to stage the scene to appear as if he had taken his own life.
Following the investigation, Judith Nix was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Kenneth Nix. She was subsequently convicted of the crime. After her conviction, Judith Nix was sentenced to serve 39 years to life in prison for the murder of her ex-husband.
