In the crisp autumn air of November 13, 2017, the life of 15-year-old Erica Bradberry was tragically cut short in Oklahoma City. A dispute outside a residence near S.W. 37th and Portland Avenue escalated into gunfire, shattering the evening's peace. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Erica in the front yard, having succumbed to injuries consistent with a homicide.
The violence of that night also claimed the life of 26-year-old Giovanny Portugal, who was found with gunshot
wounds and later died at a hospital. A third individual, 22-year-old Jassiel Castro, was also shot but managed to survive after undergoing emergency surgery. The shooting was the culmination of an altercation that had broken out among a group of people gathered at the location.
In the aftermath of the deadly encounter, investigators identified two suspects in connection with the shootings. Luis Gerrado Ortiz and Armando Neri were subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Erica Bradberry and Giovanny Portugal. They also faced a charge of assault and battery with a deadly weapon for the injuries sustained by Jassiel Castro.
