In the late summer of 2018, the life of Roy Wayne Cobb, a 37-year-old man from Tulsa, Oklahoma, was brought to a tragic and violent end. On the evening of August 8th, while riding his bicycle near Tulsa's American Airlines maintenance facility on North Mingo Road, Cobb was fatally shot. The suddenness of his death sent ripples of shock and grief through his family and friends, who remembered him as a man who enjoyed car races, fishing, and spending time with his loved ones.
The
investigation into Cobb's death quickly led authorities to a suspect, a teenager named Haydn Lee Sainsbury. At the time of the shooting, Sainsbury was 17 years old and had a connection to Cobb through his mother. It was revealed that Cobb had been in an on-and-off relationship with Sainsbury's mother, and there were allegations that Cobb had been abusive towards her. This motive of what prosecutors would later call 'vigilante justice' became a central point in the unfolding legal drama. Sainsbury was arrested in connection with the shooting, with evidence being recovered from his home in the nearby city of Owasso.
During the subsequent legal proceedings, Sainsbury, who was charged with first-degree murder, admitted to the shooting. His defense argued that he was protecting his family from Cobb's alleged abuse. He testified that he had not intended to kill Cobb but admitted to shooting at him as he tried to flee. The jury ultimately found Sainsbury guilty of the lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter in the heat of passion.
