On a fateful night in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the life of 25-year-old Chauncey Jodonis Thomas, a Black / African American man, came to a violent end. It was May 26, 2019, when Thomas and an accomplice, Justin Harjo, embarked on a home invasion that would turn deadly. The pair targeted a residence with the intent to commit armed robbery.
Their plan unraveled when they were confronted by the homeowner, Dion Carr. A struggle ensued, and in the chaos, gunfire erupted.
Both Thomas and Carr sustained fatal gunshot wounds. While Carr died at the scene, Harjo managed to help his wounded accomplice escape. Harjo drove Thomas to a local hospital, leaving him at the entrance before fleeing. Thomas succumbed to his injuries three days later.
In the aftermath, law enforcement launched an investigation that led them to Justin Harjo. He was subsequently arrested and faced charges related to the deadly home invasion. Harjo eventually entered into a plea agreement for his role in the crime that resulted in two deaths. He was sentenced to 216 months in federal prison for conspiracy to carry, brandish, and use a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, followed by three years of supervised release. In an attempt to cover his tracks, Harjo had also burned the vehicle used during the robbery in a rural field to destroy evidence.
