Later, around 9:00 p.m., police found him walking outside, noticeably intoxicated but coherent. In an act of concern, the officers chose not to arrest him and instead took him to the Budget Inn on Austin Street, ensuring he was checked into a room. They even watched as he went upstairs, presumably to settle in for the night. This was the last time he was officially seen. Sometime later that same evening, a hotel employee discovered the door to Toups's room was open. Inside were his identification and the room key, but Larkie Toups was gone. He had vanished without a trace, leaving behind the essential items one would need to navigate the world. He was last seen wearing a red shirt over a white shirt, blue jeans, and blue canvas slip-on shoes. He is described as a white male with gray hair and a mustache, who speaks with a distinct Cajun accent. His family noted that he could become confused when intoxicated, which might have contributed to his disappearance. The years that followed have been filled with anguish and uncertainty for his loved ones. They firmly believe that it was highly uncharacteristic of him to be out of contact and suspect he is no longer alive. The investigation into his disappearance has been complex and, at times, stagnant. Authorities have identified two individuals they suspect may have been involved in a robbery that could have unintentionally led to his death.
