In the early hours of June 18, 2019, the life of 33-year-old Curtiss Eugene Gaines, a male resident of Tulsa, Oklahoma, came to a violent and tragic end. Initially, the scene at his residence suggested a self-inflicted gunshot wound, with a shotgun discovered beneath his body. However, the diligent work of investigators soon unraveled a more sinister narrative, revealing that Gaines had been fatally shot in the upper torso with a pistol.
The investigation into his death uncovered a
fateful phone call Gaines received at approximately 3:00 a.m. on the day he was killed. The call was from a woman later identified as Nicole Deonn Williams. This communication was traced to a phone belonging to her boyfriend, Barton Roy Vann. Shortly after the call, Gaines informed a friend that he needed to leave and was heading home. Unbeknownst to him, this would be his final journey.
Williams and Vann were reportedly driven to Gaines's home by another individual around 3:30 a.m. The driver, who waited in the vehicle, believed the couple was there to purchase drugs, as they had done in the past. However, the transaction took a deadly turn when Vann allegedly produced a handgun in an attempt to rob Gaines. A struggle ensued, during which Gaines managed to arm himself with a shotgun. In the confrontation, Vann fired his handgun, inflicting the fatal wound that ended Gaines's life.
Following the investigation, both Nicole Deonn Williams and Barton Roy Vann were implicated in the murder. Williams was charged with first-degree felony murder and robbery in Indian Country. Vann was also scheduled to face trial in connection with the death of Curtiss Gaines. The case highlighted the dangerous intersection of firearms and illegal narcotics, forever altering the lives of all involved.
