Jonta Perry, a 26-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on June 2, 2014, in a confrontation that took place in North Tulsa, Oklahoma. The incident unfolded near North Garrison Avenue and East Young Place at a house where Perry had previously resided. He had gone to the residence to retrieve personal belongings.
A dispute over the property escalated into a physical altercation on the front porch between Perry and the current resident, a 30-year-old man related to the landlord.
Witnesses reported that Perry assaulted the resident. As Perry walked back towards his car, he allegedly made threats, leading the resident to fear that Perry was retrieving a weapon. In response, the resident shot Perry multiple times.
After being shot, Perry managed to drive a short distance before his vehicle crashed into several houses and a truck. When medical examiners arrived at the scene, they discovered a pistol in Perry's pocket. The 30-year-old shooter was taken into police custody for questioning but was later released. Authorities indicated that no charges were immediately filed, and the shooter's name would not be made public unless formal charges were pursued by the Tulsa County District Attorney's office. The investigation suggested that the shooting was an act of self-defense, and as of now, there have been no arrests or further litigation in the case.
