Jath Ralph Burns, a 46-year-old man, was a father, fiancé, and beloved member of his community in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he was known to many as 'New York.' Originally from Brooklyn, New York, he had built a life in Tulsa and was the owner of the Uptown Club, an after-hours establishment near 63rd and South Peoria Avenue. Burns was known for his infectious laugh and personality, and for being a caring individual who was dedicated to his community.
His passion for entertainment and bringing people together led him and his wife to open the Uptown Club in May of 2018, envisioning it as a family-friendly establishment.
In the early morning hours of Saturday, February 27, 2021, a fight broke out inside the Uptown Club. Burns, acting as a peacekeeper, intervened to break up the altercation. The fight then spilled out into the club's parking lot, where the situation escalated tragically. Shots were fired, and Burns was struck by the gunfire. He died at the scene. Tulsa Police described the incident as a tragedy, stating that Burns was simply trying to do the right thing and protect his patrons.
The investigation into the shooting death of Jath Burns continued for several months. Then, on June 30, 2021, Tulsa police arrested a suspect in connection with the murder. Marquan Marshall was taken into custody at a home near 16th and Garnett. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm after committing a felony. Jath Burns was remembered by his loved ones as a compassionate and resilient man whose word was his bond. A memorial service was held for him on Thursday, March 11, 2021.
