In the spring of 2021, the life of 57-year-old Joyce Ann Smith was tragically cut short in a violent encounter on the streets of northeast Oklahoma City. On the afternoon of April 20th, a grim discovery was made when an off-duty police officer found a man suffering from a gunshot wound inside his vehicle near Northeast 36th Street and Kelley Avenue.
The scene grew more somber when, only a short distance away, Joyce Ann Smith was found critically injured in her own vehicle at Northeast 35th Street and Lindsey Avenue. Emergency services transported her to OU Medical Center, but her injuries proved to be fatal.
The ensuing investigation by the Oklahoma City police quickly determined that the two shootings were not isolated incidents but were, in fact, connected. A crucial break in the case came from a witness who reported seeing shots fired at Smith's van from an SUV. This eyewitness account proved instrumental in leading investigators to a person of interest.
Following the trail of evidence, authorities identified 51-year-old Dennis Walker Senior as the primary suspect. The SUV he was driving matched the description provided by the witness. A search of his vehicle uncovered a gun and shell casings that were consistent with those recovered from the crime scene near Smith's van. In a twist to the investigation, it was discovered that Walker had also been shot and had spent close to a week recovering from his own injuries in the hospital. Following his medical release, Walker was taken into custody and booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center on a complaint of first-degree murder for his alleged role in the death of Joyce Ann Smith.
