In the summer of 2021, the life of a vibrant 12-year-old boy from Lawton, Oklahoma, was tragically cut short. Erick Jerome Berry Jr., a Black male known for his joyful spirit and a smile that could light up any room, was fatally shot on July 19, 2021, and succumbed to his injuries the following day. Erick was a boy full of endless energy, remembered for his love of sports, playing on his PlayStation, and his playful antics that brought laughter to those around him.
He had a particular fondness for hot chips and ranch.
The circumstances of his death led to an investigation that identified a 16-year-old, Prayeon Jackson, as the individual involved in the shooting. The incident sent ripples of grief and shock through the Lawton community. Jackson was subsequently arrested and faced legal proceedings for his role in the young boy's death.
In April 2022, Prayeon Jackson pleaded guilty to a charge of manslaughter in connection with Erick's death. As a result of his plea, the court ordered him to enter a program that would last until May of 2023. The sentencing sparked controversy and emotional responses from many in the community who felt the punishment was not severe enough for the loss of a young life.
