In the late summer evening of August 28, 2021, the life of 15-year-old Rudy Simmons, a White male, was tragically cut short in a mobile home park in southeast Oklahoma City. A freshman at Moore High School, Rudy was known for his love of video games, basketball, and spending time with his family and friends. He was remembered as a sweet and loving teen who enjoyed cooking, swimming, and cheering for the OKC Thunder and OU Sooners.
On that Saturday night, police responded to a call around
9 p.m. and discovered Rudy at the scene with a fatal gunshot wound. Investigators learned that he had been with a group of other juveniles when the incident occurred. The preliminary investigation suggested that the shooting was accidental, a result of "horseplay with a gun" that led to the firearm discharging.
In the wake of the tragedy that claimed the life of the young man just two days after his 15th birthday, authorities did not immediately make any arrests. The Oklahoma City Police Department indicated that upon the conclusion of their investigation, the case would be presented to the Cleveland County District Attorney's Office. It would then be up to the district attorney to determine what charges, if any, would be appropriate in the accidental shooting death of Rudy Simmons.
