On January 3, 2022, a tragic incident unfolded in the parking lot of a Dollar General store on Spencer-Jones Road in Oklahoma City, leading to the death of 28-year-old Donnell Smith Jr. A resident of Jones, Oklahoma, Smith was a father to two daughters and was known for his kind-hearted and fun-loving nature. The events that led to his untimely death began as an argument between one of his companions and two juveniles.
Smith attempted to intervene and de-escalate the situation.
During this altercation, one of the juveniles reportedly noticed a concealed pistol in Smith's waistband. This observation prompted Kody Melendrez, the father of one of the juveniles who was present in a nearby truck, to open fire. Melendrez discharged his weapon 13 times, striking Smith approximately nine times. Following the shooting, Melendrez and the two juveniles fled the scene. Smith was privately transported to a hospital in Midwest City, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified Kody Melendrez as the primary suspect. The Ford F-150 truck at the scene was registered in his name, and a witness later identified him in a police lineup. Further evidence was gathered from phone data, which placed Melendrez at the location of the shooting at the time it occurred. Melendrez was initially arrested on February 3, 2022, but was released 28 days later without charges being filed at that time.
However, the investigation continued, and on March 7, 2023, Kody Melendrez was arrested again in connection with the death of Donnell Smith Jr. This time, he was charged with first-degree murder. Court documents later revealed that Melendrez had admitted to the shooting in a phone call made from the Oklahoma County Detention Center. He is currently being held on a $10 million bond as the legal proceedings in this case are ongoing.
