In the early morning hours of June 27, 2022, a report of a car crash near Admiral and Delaware in Tulsa, Oklahoma, led police to a grim discovery. Inside the vehicle, which was confirmed to be his own, sat 43-year-old Tony Lawrence Morrison, a male who had been fatally shot in the front seat. What initially appeared to be a traffic accident was quickly reclassified as a homicide investigation.
The Tulsa Police Department began to piece together the events leading to Morrison's death.
Surveillance footage from a nearby gas station, captured moments before the shooting, became a crucial piece of evidence. The video showed two individuals whose descriptions matched those provided by witnesses at the scene. These individuals were identified as Christopher Phillips, who also went by the name Charles Wheeler, and Jamilah Powell. With suspects identified, an active search was initiated to bring them into custody.
For several weeks, Phillips and Powell remained at large. The Tulsa Police Department's warrants unit diligently tracked their movements, connecting them to a string of other crimes in addition to the murder of Tony Morrison. The pursuit came to a dramatic end on July 13, 2022. After locating the suspects in a stolen car, a police chase ensued. Officers deployed stop sticks to halt the vehicle, causing it to crash near Pine and Peoria. Phillips and Powell were apprehended at the scene. Both faced multiple charges, including murder, bringing a significant development in the case and a step towards justice for Tony Morrison and his grieving family.
