The incident occurred after Ja'Kyla's mother, Kavina Wallace, reported Jeramie to the police for spousal abuse.
The family had been experiencing ongoing domestic disputes, but no one anticipated such a devastating outcome. On the day of the incident, Jeramie reportedly pulled out a gun and threatened to kill everyone around him. He shot Ja'Kyla while her mother managed to escape. When the police arrived and began to close in on the house, Jeramie shot himself.
Following the murder-suicide, the family's home was burglarized, with a television being stolen sometime after the police had left the scene. The home had been boarded up after the tragic event. Family members and the community were left in shock and grief, with a vigil held to honor Ja'Kyla and her father.
