Jahara Kennedy, a 20-year-old African American woman, was celebrating her sister's birthday with friends and family at a party on the north side of Milwaukee on January 4, 2015. The gathering was being held at the Days Inn on North 6th Street.
The celebration turned tragic when a group of men attempted to rob the partygoers. In a moment of fear, Jahara sought safety by barricading herself behind a closed door.
One of the assailants fired a gun through the door, and a bullet struck Kennedy in the head. The shooting was reported to the police at approximately 12:40 p.m.
Following an investigation into the fatal shooting, four men were charged in connection with Jahara's death. Two of the suspects, 17-year-old Charlie D. Johnson and 19-year-old Ricky Ray Allen, Jr., later pleaded guilty to felony murder while committing an armed robbery.
