In the early morning hours of Sunday, November 19, 2023, Elizabeth Behlmer, a 44-year-old female, was shot and killed in her Milwaukee, Wisconsin, apartment. Police believe the killing was an act of domestic violence.
Around 3 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Mariner Pointe Apartments on the city’s northwest side, located near North 99th Street and just south of Bradley Road.
A neighbor later told reporters they had heard arguing from the apartment but could not understand what was being said. The arguing was followed by the sound of a couple of gunshots.
When police arrived, they found Elizabeth Behlmer inside an apartment with a gunshot wound. She was pronounced deceased at the scene. Officers also located a 60-year-old man at the scene who had a fatal gunshot wound that appeared to be self-inflicted.
On Friday, November 24, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office formally identified the victim as Elizabeth Behlmer and the 60-year-old man as Edward Burgess. Investigators concluded that the incident was a murder-suicide. One neighbor, reflecting on the tragedy, asked, "I just wanna know what was the root of the problem? What do we need to do out here as a community?"
