Mariana Christian, a 31-year-old White/Caucasian woman, was last seen alive on July 19, 2025, near her apartment in Wichita, Kansas. Concerns for her welfare arose two days later, on July 21, when a friend arrived to pick her up for work and she was nowhere to be found. At the apartment, the friend encountered a man later identified as 31-year-old Kyle Bearden, who was living with Christian but not on the lease.
Bearden claimed that Mariana had left with an unknown man and woman on July 18 and had not returned. He even expressed concern for her safety.
After multiple failed attempts to contact her, Mariana's friend reported her missing to the Wichita Police Department on July 21. Investigators soon identified Bearden as a person of interest. The investigation led them to search Cottonwood Park in east Wichita, where they discovered human remains on July 29. Evidence of foul play was also found inside Christian's apartment. On July 31, the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center confirmed the remains belonged to Mariana Christian. Authorities determined she had been fatally shot. It later emerged that Christian, who had once experienced homelessness herself, was helping Bearden get back on his feet by letting him stay with her.
Wichita Police arrested Kyle Bearden on July 30, and he was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail. He was subsequently charged with premeditated first-degree murder. In a swift legal process, Bearden pleaded guilty to the charges in August. On October 20, 2025, a judge sentenced him to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. If paroled, he would face an additional 15 years of imprisonment. Bearden had a prior criminal history, including charges of aggravated assault and being a felon in possession of a firearm in New Mexico.
