Ivy Unruh, a 25-year-old woman from Wichita, Kansas, died after she was shot outside her northeast Wichita apartment complex in what police described as a domestic violence-related homicide. Online reports identified her as a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and a broadcast engineer for PBS Kansas, someone remembered by family, coworkers, and friends as dependable, brave, and deeply loved.
Although the initial information lists April 17, 2026, as her date of death, online news reports state that April 17 was the day she was shot and that she died three days later, on April 20, 2026, at a Wichita hospital.
The shooting happened shortly after 8 a.m. on April 17 at The Remington Apartments, located at 7272 E. 37th Street North in Wichita. When officers arrived, they found Unruh near one of the apartment buildings with a gunshot wound to her upper body. She was taken to a local hospital in grave or critical condition while investigators remained at the scene. A firearm was recovered, and police took her estranged husband, 29-year-old Joshua Orlando, into custody at or near the scene.
At first, Orlando was booked on an aggravated battery allegation while Unruh was still alive and hospitalized. After she died from her injuries, the case shifted from a shooting investigation into a homicide case. Prosecutors charged Orlando with premeditated first-degree murder, and the complaint alleged that he intentionally and with premeditation killed Unruh in a domestic violence offense. Reports say the couple was separated at the time of the shooting, and police identified Orlando as her husband or estranged husband.
Unruh’s death drew attention not only because of the violence of the attack, but because of the life she had built before it was taken. She had served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2020 to 2024 and reportedly rose to the rank of sergeant. After her military service, she worked at PBS Kansas, where coworkers described her as reliable, intelligent, and a valued part of the station. Her family also said she was an organ donor and that, after her death, she helped save six lives through organ donation.
As of the latest online reporting, Orlando had been arrested and charged, but the case was still moving through the court system. Public reports did not show a conviction or trial outcome yet, and some outlets noted that it was not clear whether he had entered a plea or retained an attorney. The suspect identified in available reports is Joshua Orlando, and no other suspects were reported in connection with Unruh’s death.
