William Green, a 39-year-old Black/African American male, was enjoying a late Saturday evening with others, playing cards near his garage on September 27, 2014, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The sounds of nearby gunshots briefly interrupted their game, a prelude to the violence that would soon arrive at their location near 1st and Auer. Shortly after the initial disturbance, a white car pulled up, stopping directly in front of the garage where Green and his companions were gathered.
From the
passenger side of the vehicle, a man emerged, brandishing a handgun and pointing it toward the group. In a seemingly desperate attempt to de-escalate the situation, Green raised his hands and gestured down the street, telling the gunman that the people he was likely looking for had gone that way. The armed man dismissed Green's plea, accusing him of lying and insisting that the individuals he sought were inside the garage. Following this brief and tense exchange, the car drove a short distance away before stopping once more.
The passenger then fired three to four shots in the direction of William Green and the others. Struck by the gunfire, Green fell to the ground, fatally wounded. The incident was quickly reported to the authorities, and through the accounts of several witnesses, police were able to identify the shooter.
The suspect was identified as 18-year-old Krishawn Brown. He was arrested and charged with the homicide of William Green. Investigators also successfully identified the vehicle involved in the drive-by shooting, matching it to a specific license plate number. In October 2016, Krishawn Brown, then 20 years old, pleaded guilty to a felony charge of first-degree reckless homicide. He was subsequently taken into custody to await his sentencing.
