Lajuan Lipsey, a 21-year-old Black / African American male, was fatally shot on Monday, September 14, 2015, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The incident, which began inside a residence near 24th Place and Melvina, stemmed from a dispute over a small sum of money. Police later found Lipsey lying in the middle of the street around 10 a.m. having succumbed to his injuries after running out of the house.
The conflict that led to the shooting was reportedly an argument over $45 that was owed in
connection with marijuana. Inside the home, the situation escalated when Lajuan Lipsey allegedly grabbed a pair of red scissors and began yelling. The man he was arguing with, 19-year-old Stephan Johnson, told investigators that Lipsey came at him with the scissors.
During the ensuing struggle, Johnson retrieved a chrome. 25 caliber semi-automatic handgun from a diaper bag that was next to a couch. As Lipsey continued to make threats, he reportedly threw the scissors at Johnson. It was at this point that Johnson pointed the firearm in Lipsey's direction and fired. Johnson later stated to investigators that "he was not thinking straight when this occurred."
Following the investigation, Stephan Johnson of Milwaukee was arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting. He faced one count of first-degree reckless homicide. If convicted of the charge, Johnson faced a potential sentence of up to 60 years in prison.
