Michael Reed, a 38-year-old Black male, lost his life in a shooting on July 17, 2016, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The incident that led to his death also claimed the life of another 38-year-old man, Maurice Brown. The violence erupted on Milwaukee's north side, near 26th and Hopkins, following a dispute involving a group of seven or eight men.
According to investigators, the argument escalated into a physical altercation. Witnesses reported seeing Maurice Brown Jr.
attempting to break up the fight before he was shot at close range while on the ground. Another witness heard a second gunshot after seeking safety. Investigators were told by witnesses that a man, later identified as Terry Strickland, was the shooter. One witness recounted seeing a man with a pistol standing over an individual on the sidewalk and firing. After the shootings, the gunman was seen leaving the scene in a black SUV.
An arrest warrant for Terry Strickland was issued on July 28, 2016. By October of that year, he was charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, which led to a federal arrest warrant. The search for Strickland came to an end on January 15th of the following year, when he was apprehended in El Paso, Texas. His capture was the result of a tip to the FBI's public call line. Law enforcement, including the FBI and El Paso police, conducted a traffic stop and took Strickland into custody without incident. At the time of his capture, Strickland was on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list.
