The new year had barely begun in Milwaukee when it was marked by tragedy. Patrick Presley, a 37-year-old Black/African American male, was celebrating New Year's at Dee's Elegance Bar & Grill on the city's northwest side on January 1, 2017. What should have been a joyous occasion turned fatal in the early morning hours. An altercation arose when another man began harassing Presley's fiancée. Presley stepped in to defend her.

Witnesses reported that a man had been bothering his fiancée and attempted to grab her hand. Presley confronted the individual, telling him that she was with someone. Before he could even finish his sentence, he was shot. The shooting occurred around 5:00 a.m., and the suspects fled the scene. Sadly, Presley's death was the first homicide of the year in Milwaukee. He was a father and a business owner, running a home improvement company and also involved in music entertainment. He and his fiancée had been planning to get married later that year.

In the days following the fatal shooting, Milwaukee police announced the arrest of two suspects in connection with Patrick Presley's death. The individuals taken into custody were a 31-year-old man and a 34-year-old man. The case was to be presented to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office for review and potential charges.
