On January 25, 2017, Dandre Morehouse, a 27-year-old Black/African American male, was fatally shot in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The incident occurred in the afternoon inside a home in the 8000 block of West Beechwood Avenue. Morehouse was a loving father to a seven-year-old son and a point guard for the Milwaukee Area Technical College basketball team; he was killed just hours before a scheduled game.
His teammates, though devastated, chose to play the game in his honor, a game they won by 20 points.
According to a witness who was with Morehouse at the time of the shooting, the event was sudden and unprovoked. The witness told police that he, Morehouse, and another man, 28-year-old Amontre Ross, were all hanging out in a living room. At some point, Ross, who was described by one source as a life-long friend of Morehouse, allegedly began acting paranoid and making strange statements. Ross is said to have picked up a handgun from a table, struck Morehouse in the face with it, and pulled the trigger, but the gun did not fire. He then reportedly racked the pistol and shot Morehouse repeatedly. A medical examiner's report later confirmed Morehouse had been shot three times in the back.
Following the shooting, the Milwaukee Police Department identified Amontre O. Ross as the suspect and released his photo to the public. Two days later, on January 27, authorities received a tip that Ross was at St. Joseph's Hospital. Officers found Ross in the emergency room, where he was being treated for a wound to his hand, and arrested him without incident. Ross was subsequently charged with first-degree reckless homicide.
In court, bail for Ross was set at $200,000. During a competency hearing in December 2017, a doctor testified that Ross was incompetent to proceed with a trial but was likely to become competent in the future. The court ordered him to be committed for treatment and to be re-examined every three months.
