In the summer of 2017, the life of Maurice D. Stegall, a 28-year-old Black / African American male, was tragically cut short. On July 6th, in a neighborhood near 12th and Ring in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, events unfolded that would lead to his untimely death. Stegall was at his grandmother's home with his girlfriend when a vehicle carrying several men pulled up.
According to Stegall's girlfriend, who witnessed the tragic events, a number of men exited the vehicle, and several were armed.
She recognized one of the individuals as a man named Isaiah. The man she identified as Isaiah reportedly asked to see someone named "Kurt." In response, Stegall's girlfriend asked him to go inside the house to get the person they were looking for. What happened next inside the residence resulted in Stegall being fatally wounded.
First responders found Maurice Stegall inside the home, lying on the floor with a gunshot wound. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy later determined that the cause of death was a single gunshot wound to his lower back. A comment from a family member on a memorial page suggested that he "lost his life over some stupidity that he played no parts in."
In the days following the shooting, a suspect was identified and taken into custody. Isaiah Guy, a 27-year-old from Milwaukee, was charged with first-degree reckless homicide as party to a crime in connection with Stegall's death. He also faced charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The investigation revealed that later on the same day as the shooting, Guy had appeared at a local hospital with a gunshot wound to his pelvis. A search of his clothing at the hospital uncovered illegal narcotics, leading to additional drug-related charges.
