During the trial, Steven Pirus pleaded guilty to first-degree intentional homicide. Other charges, including arson and reckless endangerment, were dismissed as part of a plea agreement, but the judge could still consider these charges when determining his eligibility for release. Steven Pirus was sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after serving at least 20 years.
