Shahidul Miah, a 56-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant, was tragically found dead on the night of August 19, 2015, in the driveway of his home on East Warren Avenue in Longwood, Florida. Miah, who was a father of three and the owner of a Kwik Mart convenience store in Apopka, had been shot once in the upper torso. The Longwood Police Department responded to the scene shortly after 11 p.m., but despite paramedics' efforts, Miah was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, son, and a neighbor reported hearing gunfire, and the neighbor also heard someone laughing and a car pulling away immediately after the shooting.
Miah's family, including his daughter Trina Miah, described him as a hardworking and simple man who had moved to the United States from Bangladesh ten years prior to his death. He was dedicated to providing for his family and had no known enemies, leading his daughter to speculate that he might have been followed home by a robber from his store. The family had already endured significant hardship, having lost Miah's wife to breast cancer four years earlier. Miah had since remarried and had a young child with his new wife.
In the aftermath of the murder, the Longwood Police Department launched an investigation but faced challenges due to the lack of witnesses and clear evidence. Detectives conducted door-to-door inquiries in the neighborhood, but no substantial leads were reported. The family held a candlelight vigil attended by nearly 100 people, including community leaders and friends, to honor Miah's memory and call for justice. The vigil was led by Imam Arthur Richards, who emphasized the need for community support in finding the perpetrator.
Despite the family's pleas and the police's efforts, no arrests have been made in connection with Shahidul Miah's murder. The case remains unsolved, and the family continues to seek answers and justice for their loved one.
