A minor traffic accident on a Milwaukee street escalated into a fatal encounter for Kurt R. Kraenzler, a 34-year-old White male, on November 30, 2017. Kraenzler was a passenger in a vehicle driven by his girlfriend when the car in front of them, a minivan, abruptly swerved and made a U-turn, causing a collision at the intersection of Green Bay Avenue and Capitol Drive.
Following the crash, Kraenzler and the driver of the minivan, Timothy Durley, both exited their vehicles.
An argument quickly erupted between the two men. The verbal altercation intensified, and at one point, Durley produced a handgun and fired a single shot into Kraenzler's chest.
As Kraenzler stumbled back towards his vehicle, Durley and his own girlfriend, who had been in the minivan, fled the scene on foot. Despite the efforts of first responders, Kraenzler succumbed to his wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident, which began as a simple traffic mishap, had tragically ended in a senseless loss of life.
An investigation into the shooting led police to identify Timothy Durley as the primary suspect. He was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with Kraenzler's death. In March 2018, a jury found Durley guilty of second-degree reckless homicide with the use of a dangerous weapon, as well as possession of a firearm by a felon. The following month, Durley was sentenced to a total of 19 years in prison for his role in the death of Kurt Kraenzler, bringing a measure of closure to a case that stemmed from a fleeting moment of road rage.
