In the early morning hours of September 2, 2018, the life of 34-year-old Lavelle Monroe, a Black/African American male from Racine, Wisconsin, was tragically cut short. Just before 1 a.m., Racine police responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of 20th and Howe Street. Upon arrival, they discovered Monroe on the ground, having sustained gunshot wounds.
He was swiftly transported to a local hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
Remembered for his infectious smile, humor, and kind heart, Lavelle was a man whose magnetic personality brought joy to those around him. He was a beloved son to Mary Jane Peet and Murl Monroe Sr., and a devoted father to his children, JeVelle, Lavesha, and Lariah. His sudden and violent death left a profound void in the lives of his family and friends.
In the days following the shooting, the Racine Police Department actively investigated the homicide, urging the public to come forward with any information. Their investigation soon led them to identify a person of interest, 30-year-old Joshua Morris. Morris was officially named as a suspect in connection with Monroe's murder, and authorities began a search for him, cautioning that he should be considered armed and dangerous.
The search for Joshua Morris extended far beyond the confines of Racine. After months of investigation, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals in both eastern Wisconsin and southern California, Morris was located and apprehended in San Diego, California, in April 2019. His capture marked a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the death of Lavelle Monroe, bringing a measure of hope to a grieving family and community seeking justice.
