Dontrell Bush, a 17-year-old high school junior from Racine, Wisconsin, tragically lost his life on May 7, 2021. Dontrell was a promising student and a star basketball player at William Horlick High School. He was known for his enthusiasm for the sport and his aspirations to attend a Division 1 college. On the night of his death, Dontrell was attending a gathering at a residence on Clairmont Street in Racine when he was fatally shot.

According to reports, Dontrell was shot by 18-year-old Joshua Daniel, who was also present at the gathering. Witnesses stated that Daniel, who did not know Dontrell, felt threatened and believed that people at the party were setting him up because they were smiling and looking at him when he entered the room. Daniel claimed that he thought Dontrell was reaching for a gun, which led him to open fire. However, witnesses confirmed that Dontrell was unarmed.
Following the shooting, Joshua Daniel was arrested and charged with first-degree intentional homicide. He was also charged with nine counts of recklessly endangering safety and possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18. During his initial court appearance, Daniel appeared visibly upset and expressed that his actions were influenced by his experiences in west Chicago, where he felt such behavior was normal.
The case proceeded through the legal system, and on March 18, 2022, Joshua Daniel was sentenced to 20 years in prison, followed by five years of extended supervision. The sentencing brought some closure to Dontrell's family, who have been deeply affected by his untimely death. His mother, Tamyra Morgan, has since turned her grief into a mission to help other children and prevent similar tragedies.
