A quadruple shooting on the evening of Thursday, October 10, 2019, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, claimed the life of a 37-year-old Black / African American man, Darrell L. Marshall. The burst of violence, which unfolded near the intersection of 38th and Wright streets around 5:30 p.m., also left three other individuals wounded, including two children.
Officers in the vicinity heard a barrage of gunshots and witnessed a chaotic scene with a group of men pointing firearms at each other and
shooting. In the aftermath of the shootout, Marshall was found to have sustained fatal injuries. A 14-year-old was left in grave condition, while a 26-year-old and a 10-year-old boy suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening. The young boy was reportedly sitting on his porch when he was struck by a bullet.
In the immediate wake of the shooting, police pursued a suspect who fled the scene on foot. The chase concluded several blocks away with the apprehension of an individual. Authorities later identified the man taken into custody as Jerry Versey, a 27-year-old from Milwaukee. A firearm was recovered at the time of his arrest.
Versey was subsequently charged with possession of a firearm by a felon in connection with the incident. The mother of the 10-year-old victim later stated that she believed the tragedy could have been averted, claiming that her family had contacted the police three times prior to the shooting about a stolen gun and a related dispute. She asserted that officers did not arrive until after the gunfire had erupted. Milwaukee police officials said they were responding to a report of a theft in the area when they heard the shots and shifted their attention to the active shooting.
