In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on April 7, 2020, the life of Michael Powell, a 26-year-old Black / African American male, was cut short by gunfire. The incident occurred at a residence near 29th and Melvina, where Powell was found deceased inside the home. An investigation into the shooting sought to piece together the events that led to the fatal encounter.
According to the investigation that followed, Powell had entered a residence belonging to two brothers, Aaron and Aric Jones.
Powell, who reportedly had a history of mental health issues, had entered the home without their permission, and the brothers perceived him as a threat. One of the brothers, Aric Jones, was armed with a. 40 caliber semi-automatic handgun and shot Powell, later stating that he believed Powell was armed. However, a search of Powell and the scene by law enforcement found no weapon.
Following the shooting, the Jones brothers did not contact 911 or make any attempt to get police assistance after discovering Powell in their home. Both brothers subsequently faced legal proceedings in connection with Powell's death. Aric Jones ultimately pleaded guilty to a charge of homicide by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon and was sentenced. His brother, Aaron Jones, entered a "no contest" plea to a charge of a delinquent in possession of a firearm and was sentenced to three years of probation, in addition to 30 days at the House of Correction. The court determined that the brothers' use of force was unnecessary and could have been avoided.
