Miguel Angel Rios, 30, was tragically shot and killed on December 25, 2011, in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood. On that Christmas night, Miguel had stepped out, intending to meet his girlfriend, but instead was targeted by unknown assailants. He was shot and robbed, leaving his family and community in shock. Miguel, known as "Chipo" to his friends and loved ones, was a promising young man who had just graduated from UIC College Prep and had plans to attend the University of Illinois Chicago to study mechanical engineering. His aspirations were cut short by this senseless act of violence.
Miguel’s mother, Catalina Andrade, recalls the last time she saw her son alive. On the night before his death, Miguel had expressed his love for her, offering what would become their last hug. Since that fateful day, Catalina and her family have struggled not only with their grief but also with the lack of justice. Despite repeated appeals to law enforcement, city officials, and even organizing a rally at the Chicago FBI field office, no one has been arrested in connection with Miguel’s murder. Catalina, now part of the Mothers and Families for Justice campaign, tirelessly advocates for awareness and justice for her son and many others like him who have lost their lives to gun violence in Chicago.
The pain of Miguel's loss is deeply felt by his family. His younger siblings continue to grapple with his absence, often reflecting on the memories they shared. Miguel had been a mentor and a guiding figure, especially to his younger brother Alexander, who now feels the weight of staying safe in a city where violence remains a constant threat. His sister Anadelaih, inspired by her brother’s legacy, has expressed her desire to pursue a career in criminal justice, hoping to bring change to a system that failed her family. The enduring impact of Miguel’s loss has shaped their lives, from their day-to-day activities to their future aspirations, as they strive to honor his memory amidst the struggle for justice.
