An evening that began with socializing among friends at a tavern in Kenosha, Wisconsin, tragically ended in gunfire, leaving three men dead, including 26-year-old Atkeem Stevenson, a Black/African American male. On the night of April 17, 2021, and into the early morning of April 18, a dispute erupted at the Somers House Tavern. The conflict involved Rakayo Vinson and another patron, Kevin Donaldson.
The initial confrontation between Vinson and Donaldson escalated to a physical fight,
prompting the tavern's management to intervene and remove Vinson from the establishment. However, the situation took a deadly turn when Vinson returned to the tavern shortly after being ejected. At approximately 12:42 a.m., he approached the patio of the bar and opened fire on the patrons. The ensuing chaos resulted in the deaths of Atkeem Stevenson, Cedric Gaston, aged 24, and Kevin Donaldson, aged 22. Three other individuals were also wounded in the shooting but survived. Two of the victims, including Stevenson, were pronounced dead at the scene, while Donaldson died later at a hospital after an exchange of gunfire with Vinson outside the tavern.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement launched an investigation and quickly identified Rakayo Vinson as the primary suspect. He was apprehended in Mount Pleasant after stealing a car from friends who subsequently reported him to the authorities. Vinson was charged with three counts of first-degree intentional homicide and three counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide.
During the trial, the prosecution argued that Vinson's actions were an act of revenge stemming from the earlier altercation. Surveillance footage from the tavern was presented as key evidence, showing Vinson returning to the bar and commencing the attack. The defense contended that Vinson acted in self-defense. In January 2022, a jury found Rakayo Vinson guilty on all charges. Following the verdict, the Kenosha County District Attorney stated an intention to seek a sentence that would ensure Vinson would never be released from prison, reflecting the gravity of the loss and the impact on the families of Atkeem Stevenson, Cedric Gaston, and Kevin Donaldson.
