Deandrea Thomas, a 34-year-old Black/African American male, was killed in a shooting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on August 12, 2021. The incident occurred in an apartment near 29th and Wells, where Thomas and others were reportedly playing dominoes.
According to witness statements, a guest who had been invited over by Thomas suddenly produced a gun and opened fire. In the ensuing chaos, gunshots rang out, and the gunman was seen fleeing the scene.
One witness was also shot and had to jump from a balcony to escape the violence. Before succumbing to his injuries, Thomas was able to tell police officers who responded to the scene that the person he had invited over had attempted to rob him, which led to the shooting. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy later confirmed that his death was a homicide caused by gunshot wounds to the chest and leg.
In the course of their investigation, police identified and arrested a suspect, Daniel Thomas. He was subsequently charged with first-degree intentional homicide. However, the case took a significant turn when new evidence emerged that suggested Daniel Thomas was likely not the person responsible for the crime. As a result of this new information, the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office dismissed the case against him without prejudice.
The investigation into the death of Deandrea Thomas remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek the individual responsible for his death. No further suspects have been publicly named, and no other arrests have been made in connection with the homicide. The case remains an open and active investigation.
