The heartbreak began in the early afternoon, around 1:13 p.m., near 22nd and Keefe, when Hershel’s younger half-brother, 23-year-old Tyquawn Williams, was
shot and killed.
As the family was reeling from this sudden and violent loss, tragedy struck again. While their mother was at the hospital grappling with the death of her younger son, she received a call that delivered another crushing blow. Approximately five hours after Tyquawn's death, Hershel McCradic had also been murdered on the same block. He was shot and killed as he was coming out of the family home, compounding the family’s grief in a manner that shocked the community and even seasoned investigators. The two brothers, described as having an unbreakable bond, were taken from their loved ones in a relentless wave of violence.
The brazen nature of the killings, both occurring in broad daylight in the same location, left a deep scar on the neighborhood. The first shooting was described as a drive-by, with a vehicle pulling up and opening fire on Tyquawn as he sat in his car. The second shooting that claimed Hershel’s life also occurred as a drive-by while family members were gathered at the home to mourn the first tragedy.
