In the spring of 1908, a sense of duty cost a lawman his life in the town of Kent, Washington. On April 10th, Kent Town Marshal Harry E. Miller was shot and killed as he attempted to apprehend a group of men suspected of robbery. The fatal encounter took place near the Kent stockyards, forever marking the landscape with a tragic event.
The series of events leading to Marshal Miller's death began after the suspects had reportedly robbed a man in the nearby community of Orillia.
Following the crime, the men proceeded south along the railroad tracks, making their way towards Kent. It was there that Marshal Miller, accompanied by the town's night marshal, confronted the individuals. As the officers issued commands for them to surrender, the suspects responded with gunfire, striking and killing Marshal Miller.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a posse of determined citizens was formed to track down the responsible parties. After a relentless pursuit that culminated in a gun battle, three of the robbers were captured several days later. The wheels of justice turned for the men who had taken Marshal Miller's life. Two of the apprehended suspects were subsequently convicted of murder and received sentences of life in prison. A third suspect was found guilty of manslaughter and was sentenced to five years behind bars. The fate of a fourth individual believed to have been involved in the initial robbery remains unclear.
