Abubakar Ahmed, a 19-year-old student from Tukwila, Washington, was fatally shot on June 13, 2023, inside the AMC Theatre at Kent Station shopping center in Kent, Washington. The incident occurred at approximately 12:19 a.m. while Ahmed was attending a movie.

Ahmed, who was pursuing a Cybersecurity and Networking degree at Green River Community College, suffered a gunshot wound to the torso. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found Ahmed just inside the south entrance doors of the theater, where one of his friends was performing CPR. Due to the unknown location of the shooter, officers moved Ahmed to a safe area where medics had arrived. Despite lifesaving efforts, Ahmed tragically died at the scene.

The Kent Police Department has described the suspect as a dark-skinned male, approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall, wearing a ski mask at the time of the incident. As of June 14, 2023, no arrests had been made, and the police were still working to identify and locate the shooter.

Investigators do not believe this was a random incident, suggesting that Ahmed may have been specifically targeted. The police impounded three vehicles that might have been involved in the incident. While the possibility of gang-related activity was being explored, Kent Police Chief Rafael Padilla stated that it was too early to confirm whether this was the case.

The Kent Police Department has urged anyone with information about the incident or events leading up to the shooting to contact their tip line or email [email protected]. For time-sensitive information, the public is encouraged to call 911 and reference case number 23-7685.

This tragic event has shocked the local community and highlighted concerns about gun violence in public spaces. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to bring the perpetrator to justice and provide closure to Ahmed's family and friends.
