James M. Bennett, a 38-year-old male of White/Caucasian ethnicity, served as a deputy with the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office in Washington. On July 14, 1911, he and Deputy Frank Sinclair rode several miles north of Chelan to serve a warrant on a sheepherder accused of grazing his flock on another farmer’s land. Along the route they stopped at a spring; as Bennett leaned down to drink, his. 38-caliber Colt revolver slipped from its holster, struck the ground, and discharged.
The bullet entered his chest, and he died at the scene before help could arrive. Contemporary reporting and later memorial accounts describe the event as a tragic on-duty accident rather than an assault.
Official remembrances and law-enforcement archives consistently record the manner of death as an accidental discharge of Bennett’s own sidearm. No suspects were identified, and there were no arrests connected to his death, which was categorized as an inadvertent gunfire fatality. In the years since, regional and national memorials have honored him, including entries on officer remembrance rolls and a 2015 ceremony in Spokane that featured a eulogy recognizing his sacrifice.
