On a summer evening in Seattle, Washington, the life of a 36-year-old Caucasian male named Austin J. Derby came to a tragic end. The events that culminated in his death on July 1, 2014, began with a high-speed chase initiated by Washington State Patrol troopers who attempted to pull him over for speeding. Derby, with a female passenger in his pickup truck, led officers on a chase that reportedly reached speeds of 100 miles per hour, heading north into Seattle.
The pursuit ended when the truck crashed, and Derby fled on foot, leaving the injured passenger behind. She was later taken to a hospital with minor injuries and was not considered a suspect.
Derby sought refuge in a residential shed on Beacon Hill. A Seattle Police K-9 unit, guided by a helicopter using thermal imaging, located him. As officers approached, Derby warned them, "I've got a pistol, too." When confronted, he pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the officers. In response, a six-year veteran of the police department fired several shots, fatally wounding Derby. It was later determined that the weapon he was holding was a realistic-looking pellet gun.
Following the incident, the King County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that Austin J. Derby died from multiple gunshot wounds. At the time of his death, Derby had an extensive criminal history and outstanding warrants for forgery and drug charges. The officer who shot him was placed on paid administrative leave, a standard procedure in such cases. In October 2014, the King County Executive ordered an inquest to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting. The investigation and subsequent inquest focused on the actions of the officer who fired the fatal shots. No other suspects were sought in connection with Derby's death.
