On a summer evening in Seattle, Washington, on July 9, 2017, the life of 32-year-old Shamar Curry, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. He was at the Rainier Playfield when a drive-by shooting occurred. In the aftermath, Curry was discovered in the street, having sustained a gunshot wound to his torso. Emergency services rushed him to Harborview Medical Center, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Another man who was with Curry, Larry Anderson, was also injured in the attack but ultimately survived.
The investigation into the shooting led police to identify a suspect vehicle, described by witnesses as a green Ford SUV from the late 1990s. This crucial piece of information allowed authorities to track down the vehicle and its owner. With the help of the Puyallup Police Department, a 43-year-old man named Lloyd Hinton was apprehended in Puyallup. During questioning, Hinton admitted to being the driver of the SUV involved in the fatal shooting. He was subsequently arrested and booked into the King County Jail for investigation of murder.
Prosecutors later charged Hinton with second-degree murder and first-degree assault for his role in the incident. It is believed that the shooting was an act of retaliation, though Shamar Curry may not have been the intended target. In a tragic turn of events, a friend of Curry's who had witnessed the shooting was himself killed just five days later at the same location while visiting a memorial that had been set up for Curry.
