On September 15, 1954, King County Sheriff's Deputy Donald A. Armeni was tragically killed in the line of duty. Deputy Armeni, aged 45, was shot and killed by Deeroy Johnson, a mentally disturbed Army veteran, during an attempt to arrest him at a cabin on Lake Joy, located southeast of Duvall, Washington. Johnson, who had been in and out of mental institutions since 1948, feared being returned to a mental institution and resisted arrest violently.
