On a summer evening in Auburn, Washington, a dispute over a set of tools escalated into a fatal encounter for James Robert Smith. The 26-year-old man, a proud member of the Muckleshoot tribe, was working on bicycles with a friend near Fenster Park on July 18, 2016, when he was confronted by Travis Pendley. Pendley, who had never met Smith before that day, accused Smith of having his tools, leading to a heated argument.
The verbal altercation quickly turned violent.
Pendley, armed with a stolen shotgun, fired at Smith, striking him in the torso. Smith was left fatally wounded, and he died on July 19, 2016. Pendley fled the scene but was later apprehended. He claimed that he acted in self-defense, alleging that Smith had struck him in the face and was advancing toward him in a threatening manner.
Following an investigation, Travis Pendley was charged with second-degree murder and firearm theft. In February 2018, he pleaded guilty to the charges. On April 27, 2018, at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, Washington, Pendley was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the death of James Robert Smith. During the sentencing, Smith's family shared emotional testimony, remembering him as a vibrant and loving individual with a passion for sports.
