On a late autumn evening in Renton, Washington, the life of a young Caucasian male, 21-year-old Jason Hobbs Jr., was brought to a violent and tragic end. On November 30, 2018, what was supposed to be a resolution to a dispute through a fistfight escalated into a fatal encounter in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Aberdeen Avenue Northeast.
Hobbs, who was on the verge of fatherhood with his first child due in a few months, had agreed to meet two brothers to settle a "beef," explicitly stating that no guns should be involved. The disagreement reportedly stemmed from the brothers' belief that Hobbs had been involved in a shooting incident at their uncle's house.
Earlier that day, Hobbs had met with one of the brothers, Cristian Magana-Arevalo, at a Subway restaurant to discuss settling the matter. The conversation seemingly ended with an agreement for a physical fight to end the conflict. That evening, around 6:30 p.m., Hobbs arrived at the designated apartment complex. However, the planned fistfight quickly turned deadly. Surveillance footage from the scene captured two men assaulting Hobbs. He was beaten and then shot. Wounded and attempting to crawl away, Hobbs was pursued by one of the assailants who stood over him and fired several more shots. First responders arrived to find Hobbs at the foot of a stairwell, but their attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the homicide led Renton police to 21-year-old Cristian A. Magana-Arevalo, who was arrested in Bellevue a week after the shooting. Evidence, including his vehicle and a gun case matching the type of weapon used, linked him to the crime. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder. Although he denied his involvement, he was convicted and sentenced to 320 months for the murder with an additional 60 months for a firearm enhancement. His brother, Jose G. Magana Arevalo, was also identified as a person of interest in the case, as it was believed he was present at the scene and had communicated with Hobbs to arrange the meeting.
